The Literature Review Step by Step: Step 2

Step by step process for writing a literature review.

Step 2: Discover your Claims

Step 2 is all about identifying logical evidence that supports your argument or thesis. This is still part of early research that will help determine the major points that will support your topic in the body of your paper.

Developing Arguments

More About Making Claims

The claim statements (or your main points) move your research argument along. They should directly relate to the argument, give compelling reason, justifiable evidence, and provide clarity.

Data vs. Evidence

  • Data is small bits of information that do not validate claims on their own.
  • Evidence is data collected for the specific purpose of supported a claim.

Data Quality

  • Data must be accurate, precise, and authoritative.

Data Relevance

  • Data must be relevant by matching the claim and provide an accurate account.

Present a well-rounded argument for the claims that include information representing all side of the debate.

Data the disputes your claim can:

  • negate your claim
  • Narrow the scope of your claim
  • This can qualify your thesis by making you narrow your claims to one specific topic/idea/event
