AMA Style: In-Text Citations

Referencing Sources in-text

References should be numbered in the order they are used in the text. Use superscript numerals to note the reference used.

Try to avoid placing multiple citation numbers at the end of a sentence. It is better practice to place the citation number next to the idea being cited, as this allows the reader to find the exact information in the source.

*superscript the numbers outside of a comma or period.

*superscript the numbers on the inside of a colon or semicolon.

*when citing multiple resources that are consecutive (i.e. 5, 6, 7, & 8), use a hyphen to show the series (i.e. 5-8)

Avoid placing a superscript directly after a number or abbreviated unit of measure.
