Mendeley Reference Manager: Overview

Mendeley is a reference manager and academic social network designed to help researchers, students, and professionals organize their research, collaborate with others, and cite sources efficiently.

Mendeley

Mendeley helps you:

  • Store and organize research articles, PDFs, and other reference materials.
  • Automatically extract citation details (author, title, journal, etc.) from PDFs.
  • Create folders or tags to group related papers (e.g., by topic or project).
  • Insert in-text citations while writing your paper.
  • Automatically generate bibliographies in any citation style (APA, MLA, AMA, Chicago, etc.)
  • Your library syncs across devices (desktop, web, and mobile).
  • You can share references or full-text PDFs with collaborators in private groups.

Creating an Account

Creating a Mendeley account is free.

A free Mendeley account includes 2GB of personal storage and 100MB of shared storage for group projects. Free users can create up to five private groups and join an unlimited number of existing ones. However, each private group created under a free account can include up to 25 members.

Mendeley also offers premium plans that provide additional personal storage and expanded collaboration options.

Sync your Web Library and Desktop App

Syncing your Mendeley web account with Mendeley Reference Manager allows you to access your citation library from multiple locations. If you install the desktop application on more than one computer, syncing through your Mendeley web account will ensure that your library stays up to date across all devices. The sync button is located in the upper right-hand corner next to your account name.
